Tips: Hotel Safety Considerations

1. Don't answer the door in a hotel or motel room without verifying who it is. If a person claims to be an employee, call the front desk and ask if someone from their staff is supposed to have access to your room and for what purpose.

2. When returning to your hotel or motel late in the evening, use the main entrance of the hotel. Be observant and look around before entering parking lots.

3. Close the door securely whenever you are in your guest room and use all of the locking devices provided.

4. Don't needlessly display guest room keys in public or carelessly leave them on restaurant tables, at the swimming pool, or other places where they can be easily stolen.

5. Do not draw attention to yourself by displaying large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry.

6. Do not invite strangers to your hotel room.

7. Place all valuables in the hotel or motel's safe deposit box.

8. In any hotels or motels, check to see that any sliding glass doors or windows and any connecting room doors are locked.

9. Your room number is your primary form of security when you're on the road.

10. When checking in, make sure the desk person writes down your room number when handing you the key, rather than saying your room number out loud. If they do, ask for another room. When charging to your room, always write down the number rather than saying it.

11. Never leave your children unattended. Familiarize them with their new surroundings, emergency exits and other safety procedures.

12. Keep your vehicle doors locked at all times. Park under street lamps whenever possible.

13. When checking in, read the floor-plan map. Remember fire and emergency exits.

14. Be aware of distractions staged by would-be scam artists. They may be lifting your wallet.

15. Do not leave jewelry, money or other items lying loosely around hotel rooms when you go out, even for a short while (like to the hotel swimming pool). Lock them in room or hotel safes. Do not leave them unattended at poolside or the beach either.

16. Make sure rooms are securely locked and chains fastened wherever possible. Do not leave room keys lying out at swimming pools.

17. Do not leave the door open while you are lying in the room. Always lock the door while you are in the room.

18. Lock any packages, cameras or other valuable items in me trunk when you leave your car. Use the hotel desk safe if possible.

19. Pay attention when you are walking and/or driving through hotel and restaurant parking lots.  If you see anyone suspicious, notify the hotel management. Look around before opening your hotel room door to make sure no one is lurking nearby.

20. When checking into a hotel, request a room that is not on the first floor (if possible). Also, while rooms that have sliding doors leading into a pool area are nice, they also increase your risk of being broken into.
